Eucalypts is one of the main species used for commercial reforestation in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. This study aimed to evaluate the survival and early growth of eucalyptus trees in an area subject to sandy process after three years of growth. The Eucalyptus grandis seedlings were grown in a greenhouse, innoculated or not with the isolated ectomycorrhizal Pisolithus microcarpus (UFSC-Pt116), produced in peat or Entisol. After 120 days, the seedlings were transplanted to an area subject to the sandy process, in the city of São Francisco de Assis, RS. The plants have been evaluated regarding survival, height, stem diameter, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium levels and total phosphorus, inorganic phosphorus, organic phosphorus and wood...

Initial Recovery of Organic Matter of a Grass-Covered Constructed Soil after Coal Mining Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Leal,Otávio dos Anjos; Castilhos,Rosa Maria Vargas; Pinto,Luiz Fernando Spinelli; Pauletto,Eloy Antonio; Lemes,Elisa Souza; Kunde,Roberta Jeske.
ABSTRACT Revegetation is essential to improve the quality of constructed soils. This study investigated effects of perennial grasses on total organic carbon (TOC) stock, organic matter (OM) fractions and on quality of a recently constructed soil, after coal mining. Soil samples were collected from the 0.00-0.03 m layer two years after the beginning of the experiment. The treatments consisted of Cynodon dactylon cv vaquero (T1); Urochloa brizantha (T2); Panicum maximun (T3); Urochloa humidicola (T4); Hemarthria altissima (T5); Cynodon dactylon cv tifton (T6); bare constructed soil (T8); and natural soil (T9). The treatments with grass species increased the TOC stock by 57 % and increased the OM lability in comparison with T8. Higher C accumulation in the...

Microbial and soil properties in restoration areas in the jequitinhonha valley, Minas Gerais Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Santos,Danielle Cristina Fonseca; Grazziotti,Paulo Henrique; Silva,Alexandre Christófaro; Trindade,Aldo Vilar; Silva,Enilson de Barros; Costa,Lidiomar Soares da; Costa,Hesmael Antônio Orlandi.
To mitigate the impacts of eucalypt monoculture, forestry companies in the Upper Jequitinhonha Valley (MG) have adopted the insertion of strips of native vegetation in-between the commercial plantations. The method used for the creation of these corridors is to allow spontaneous regrowth of native vegetation in areas previously under eucalypt. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of cover crops on microbial and soil properties for a detailed description of the restoration process of native vegetation in forest soils of the Jequitinhonha Valley. The treatments were represented by an initial restoration stage (< 4 years) with or without remaining eucalypt and the advanced restoration stage (> 4 years) with or without remaining...

Nucleation in tropical ecological restoration Scientia Agricola
Reis,Ademir; Bechara,Fernando Campanhã; Tres,Deisy Regina.
Ecological theories of facilitation and nucleation are proposed as a basis for environmental restoration in tropical ecosystems. The main goal of this paper is to present restoration techniques based on the concept of nucleation, in which small nuclei of vegetation are established within a degraded land. The nucleation techniques (artificial shelters for animals, planting of herbaceous shrub life forms, soil and seed bank translocation, seed rain translocation, soil and seed rain translocation's seedling set, artificial perches, planting of native trees in groups, and ecological stepping-stones with functional groups) promote the landscape connectivity on two flows: inward: receiver connectivity and outward: donor connectivity. The nuclei development...

The effect of exotic grass Urochloa decumbens (Stapf) R.D.Webster (Poaceae) in the reduction of species richness and change of floristic composition of natural regeneration in the Floresta Nacional de Carajás, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
FERREIRA,LEANDRO V.; PAROLIN,PIA; MATOS,DARLEY C.L.; CUNHA,DENISE A.; CHAVES,PRISCILLA P.; NECKEL,SELVINO O..
ABSTRACT The introduction of exotic species is considered as one of the major causes of biodiversity loss. The National Forest of Carajás is one of the largest mineral provinces in the world. Mining activities caused changes of the natural habitats, leaving degraded areas after the mineral exploitation. One of the mining areas within FLONA Carajás was used for the extraction of gold. In the process of exploitation, a huge depression was formed by the removal of soil which was mounded up nearby. To prevent soil erosion of these mounds, an exotic grass, Urochloa decumbens (Stapf) R.D.Webster (Poaceae) was planted. The objective of this study was to compare the impact of this non-native grass on species richness and species composition of the natural...

Tripartite symbiosis of Sophora tomentosa, rhizobia and arbuscular mycorhizal fungi BJM
Toma,Maíra Akemi; Carvalho,Teotonio Soares de; Guimarães,Amanda Azarias; Costa,Elaine Martins da; Silva,Jacqueline Savana da; Moreira,Fatima Maria de Souza.
ABSTRACT Sophora tomentosa is a pantropical legume species with potential for recovery of areas degraded by salinization, and for stabilization of sand dunes. However, few studies on this species have been carried out, and none regarding its symbiotic relationship with beneficial soil microorganisms. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the diversity of nitrogen-fixing bacteria isolated from nodules of Sophora tomentosa, and to analyze the occurrence of colonization of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on the roots of this legume in seafront soil. Thus, seeds, root nodules, and soil from the rhizosphere of Sophora tomentosa were collected. From the soil samples, trap cultures with this species were established to extract spores and to evaluate arbuscular...

Utilization of the chlorophyll a fluorescence technique as a tool for selecting tolerant species to environments of high irradiance Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Gonçalves,José Francisco de Carvalho; Santos Júnior,Ulysses Moreira dos.
We examine the hypothesis that the chlorophyll a fluorescence technique can be an efficient tool to support the selection of species adapted to high irradiance and therefore, suitable for use in initial rehabilitation projects of degraded areas. The experiment was conducted at the Pedro de Moura Operational Base, Amazonas, Brazil. The fluorescence transients were obtained using a portable fluorometer for leaves of Bombacopsis macrocalyx (Bm), Eugenia cumini (Ec), Iryanthera macrophyla (Im) and Senna reticulata (Sr), which were subjected to high irradiance between 12:00 am and 1:00 p.m. Using the OJIP test, the following were calculated: performance index (PI ABS), density of reaction centres per cross section (RC/CS), maximum efficiency of photosystem II...
